Jill Morris: first woman ambassador in British history

The 11th April 2019 was a very important day at Landi: Jill Morris, the British ambassador in Rome, had a conference at our school. Us, journalists of the “Gazzetta del Landi”, had the possibility, and the honor, of an interview with her. She immediately showed fondness to our students and a strong spirit, with a subtle humor.

Do you consider important visting schools? Why?

First of all, it’s a great pleasure for me, I find it very enjoyable and I like meeting students. Secondary, we are focused on the next generation in Italy. We want to connect the generation of leaders in Italy with the next generation of scientists, doctors, politicians, musicians, to make sure that we continue our relationship in the future.

What will your experience in Italy leave to you?

I’m loving my time in Italy, I travel a lot around the country, so I am able to discover places in Italy I didn't know before. Italy will always be in my heart. As an ambassador, we're only here for four/five years, then we move to another place, but I know that Italy will be part of my life for the rest of it.

Are there any projects about schools?

Yes, we do lots of projects with schools: English language learning for schools to encourage and help with learning English and we also focus on Science and Technology. We're going to do an event in Autumn about girls and Science and Engineering: encouraging girls, as we do in the UK, to study these subjects because they are still not enough girls study Science, Engineering, Medicine. So we want to encourage more girls in the UK and Italy to do these subjects because when they do, they're very successful.

What consequences will Brexit bring, in your opinion?

The UK will have a deeper relationship with the EU. There will be changes, but it will still be the best friend of the EU. The European countries are our friends, our neighbors, so we hope to have the best possible relationships in the future.

How did Landi look like to you?

When I arrived, there was a reception of people waving the British flag. It was magnificent; I was very moved, very touched and the most wonderful of all the welcome here was that I felt that all the students were engaged, very attentive. There was a great sense of energy and positivity in school and, of course, I was completely blown away by the music: I thought that there's a realtalent in this school.

In sintesi, l’Ambasciatrice S.E.
